Dave has been studying martial arts since 1976. He holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in Chinese Kenpo Karate and a 2nd degree black belt in Ryukyu Kempo Tode-jitsu. In addition he has been studying Yang style Tai Chi Chuan since 1977. Dave has been an instructor for over 40 years teaching men and women of all ages how to protect themselves and their loved ones through Martial Arts training (not to mention common sense) and also how to stay calm and relaxed through Tai Chi and Qigong practice.

The Kempo Belt Structure and Testing

White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green, Brown 3 degrees, Black 4 degrees.

Each belt has a number of Self-defense Techniques, Katas and Fundamental stances, strikes, deflections and kicks that must be performed and executed with the required degree of speed, power, precision, understanding and practical application before the next belt is awarded.

Private lessons are part of the Chinese Kempo training. Each student has two private lessons each month. It is in these lessons that the student learns the Fundamentals, Self-Defense Techniques, and Katas that comprise the Chinese Kempo martial art system.

The private lessons give each student the opportunity to work with an instructor on an individual basis, enabling them to learn at their own pace. Testing is also conducted in the private lesson. There is no testing fee, belts and certificates are awarded. This is beneficial for the student financially, but it also allows for a more honest assessment. There is no sense of “buying a belt.” If a test is failed the student simply takes the test again and is not out a large sum of money. Conversely, when a test is passed the student knows it was truly earned.
